Getting Started with Supplements

In order to achieve your specific fitness goals, you must choose the correct supplements to give your body adequate nutrition and energy to improve fitness, muscle gain, and strength.

Lean Muscle Gain

If your goal is to achieve lean muscle, than these are the products you should be choosing.

Protein Powder:

Repairs, rebuilds lean muscle tissue, and increases protein synthesis. Muscle tissue is made out of protein, therefore if your not achieving your daily requirement of protein not only will you not be able to build muscle and you will struggle to maintain already existing muscle tissue. There are several different types to choose from. For fast muscle repair the best types of protein are Hydrolysed Protein and Whey Protein Isolate (WPI). These types are absorbed into the body faster and more efficiently than all other types. Although they also carry a higher price tag. If these are out of your price bracket there are also blends that contain WPI and WPC which is a slower releasing formula. Some good options for these are the Giant Sports Delicious Protein and Cytosport Complete Whey Protein.

The different types of proteins and how they work:

  • Hydrolyzed Protein: Fastest absorption and best bio-availability Great for before and after a workout
  • WPI: Fast absorption good bio-availability. Great for before and after a workout
  • WPC: Medium – Slow release. Good bio-availability. Appropriate for in between meals.
  • Casein and Micellar Casein – Extremely slow releasing formula. Great for before sleep.

Glutamine:

Glutamine is considered a conditionally essential amino acid as it can be manufactured by the body. However training 3-4 days a week can lower your bodies ability to produce Glutamine. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid within the body, making it the most important amino acid for muscle growth. Approximately 60% of skeletal muscle tissue consists of Glutamine. It also is an immune system builder, increases Growth Hormone, and stimulates protein synthesis. It also assists in volumising your muscle size making Glutamine an essential product for building muscle.

Creatine:

Creatine is a natural substance found in the body. It is utilised for ATP in the body which is the energy cycle involved in muscular contractions. It is possible to source creatine from your diet such as animal foods, however the amount absorbed by the body is not enough to make a difference to your training. Creatine helps increase muscle cell volumisation, strength, and performance. It also helps speed up muscle gain and repair.

Testosterone Boosters:

Testosterone is the bodies primary hormone for building muscle and strength. Testosterone helps the body absorb more protein which leads to muscle and strength gain. It also helps lose body fat as it works against the fat storing enzymes in the body that lead to fat storage. Therefore, Testosterone boosters are great for increasing muscle, strength and decreasing body fat.

As well as aiding muscle growth and strength, Testosterone boosters have also shown to increase fat burning by stopping the fat burning enzymes storing body fat. It also helps increase metabolic rate.

Mass Gain

The products involved in Mass gain are the same as Lean muscle gain but usually in higher quantities and with the assistance of Carbohydrates. Carbohydrates is the primary source for energy. If your body can not provide the body with enough carbohydrates it needs, than it converts protein into glycogen which is using your existing muscle mass for fuel! Carbohydrates also increase protein synthesis and create a more anabolic environment for building muscle. It is possible to get enough Carbohydrates within your diet, however this can be difficult when you have a busy schedule and don't have time to eat 6 solid meals a day. Insulin is the bodies most anabolic hormone, therefore, fast acting carbohydrates are the most effective for building muscle post workout as they spike insuline levels. Furthermore, supplementing with Extreme Carbs from IP can make a big difference in your efforts to build mass.

Body fat Loss

If your goal is to lose body fat than the following products will be right for you.

Fat Burning Protein Powder

Protein also speeds up your metabolism and the more muscle you have than the more fat you are able to burn. These blends also contain many fat burning metabolisers such as Green tea extract and L-Carnitine, ingredients to assist heating up your body to burn more calories throughout the day. They also contain carb blocking agents such as phaseolamin and chromium.

Thermogenics

These products are used to internally heat up your body causing it to burn more calories. This is possible through heating up your bodies core temperature. They also aid your body in increasing metabolic rate, Reduce the absorption of calories from fat, and help the body utilise carbohydrates and body fat for energy. Thermogenices also help suppress the appetite to reduce food cravings.

L-Carnitine/ Acetyl L-Carnitine:

The primary function of L carnitine is to move the long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria where the fats are broken down and utilised for energy. L-Carnitine is effective for performance, cardiovascular health, and managing weight. The difference between L-Carnitine and Acetyl  L-Carnitine is that Acetyl stimulates the nervous system as well as the body giving you a stronger mind muscle connection. It also is absorbed more efficiently.

Conjucated Linoleic Acid:

CLA is a naturally occuring amino acid found in meat and dairy products. It is an essential fatty acid which assists in the process of metabolising fatty tissue. It also assists in thyroid functioning which helps in decreasing abdominal fat.

The products to look for are electrolyte replacement ingredients such as Magnesium, sodium, potassium, and calcium. One example is the Nuun hydration tablets Glutamine, HMB, and Branched chain amino acids are the best muscle preservers utlilized for holding your muscle stores so they are not used for energy. Recovery

Products designed for recovery are similar to those for muscle gain. One product which I think is optimal for all aspects of recovery is the Balance Ultimate Recovery Stack.

Amino Acids:

Building blocks of protein minus the calories. Amino acids also have a faster absorption rate. The most effective amino acids for recovery are BCAA and Glutamine

Creatine:

Important for assisting in protein synthesis, absorption of amino acids in the body, and muscle tissue repair.

Carbohydrates:

Essential for restoring glycogen levels. Carbohydrates also assist the transportation of protein into the muscle and the insulin spike stimulates growth hormone.
